Company

SEA Airport Milan manages both Milan Linate and Milan Malpensa airports, serving as critical gateways connecting Northern Italy to major international destinations. Employing 2,570 people, SEA ranks among the top 10 European airport operators by passenger volume and top five for cargo traffic. Malpensa Airport, the second busiest in Italy with over 26 million passengers in 2023, offers extensive domestic, international, and intercontinental flights, serving 180 destinations with 73 airlines.

The challenge

The reopening of Terminal 2 at Malpensa Airport, necessitated by renovation changes post-pandemic, required the reinstallation of pedestrian barriers.

The challenge was to create safe walkways for passengers to move from the terminal to aircraft while adhering to strict regulatory standards and ensuring seamless integration with the airport's infrastructure. Additionally, the barriers needed to be robust enough to handle the high volume of operational traffic and adaptable to any changes in gate configurations.

The A-SAFE solution

A-SAFE collaborated closely with SEA Airport Milan to design and implement tailored safety solutions for Terminal 2. The project involved reinstalling barriers to establish safe pedestrian pathways on the aircraft apron. These pathways protected passengers from operational vehicles and aircraft movements, ensuring they could navigate the busy areas safely.

The barriers were designed to meet regulatory requirements and adapted to the existing infrastructure, with gates installed along the routes to manage passenger flows to different aircraft stands. The modularity and ease of installation of A-SAFE barriers allowed for quick adjustments and maintenance, crucial for the dynamic airport environment.

The installation process was meticulously planned to avoid disruptions to airport operations. A-SAFE's technical team worked seamlessly with SEA's project managers, addressing any challenges promptly to ensure the project's success.
